Mycology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
Biography All organisms must be able to sense and respond to their environment and defend themselves against environmental stress. Cells respond to acute environmental stress by mounting a multi-faceted cellular response that typically includes coordinated changes in transcription and translation, protein function, and metabolic fluxes, along with transient arrest of growth and cell cycle progression. …
Biography My research focuses on the ecology, epidemiology and evolution of infectious disease, combining field and laboratory studies to understand how pathogens in dynamic ecosystems are transmitted among hosts, across complex landscapes, and over time. The overall goal is to discover generalized mechanisms that govern pathogen transmission, evolution, and emergence, and to improve the health …
Biography Carbon metabolism is the energy superhighway of life. We study the diversity and evolution of yeast carbon metabolism, which is controlled by a complex system of interacting genes that respond to different carbon sources and determine the organism’s energy-use strategy. Some yeasts readily ferment sugars into ethanol, even in the presence of oxygen, but …
Biography Thomas Jeffries’ research focuses on metabolic engineering of novel yeasts for the production of fuels (ethanol) from cellulosic and hemicellulosic sugars. He has 35 years of accumulated experience in resource planning, bioconversion, pretreatment, hydrogen production and the production of ethanol from woody and agricultural residues using cellulases, hemicellulases and yeasts.
